Channels
(An ongoing conversation with Alberta Marie Bell)
This work channels my grandmother’s ability to inspire greatness and talent in my hands. I remember the process I once witnessed at the dining room table—transformed into a cutting table—where delicate, translucent patterns could only survive the softest touch. With each careful stitch, she crafted masterpieces for her community.
Her hands to my hands, her process now my process. I carry her guidance in every piece I create, stitching her legacy into my work. This conversation will continue to unfold throughout my artistic journey, expressed in different movements and evolving forms.
These masks continue a dialogue with a place I have never been. Caught between knowing and not knowing, I have the luxury of imagining my contributions to a conversation I was stolen from.
By repurposing discarded fabrics from reuse centers and thrift stores, this work extends the discussion on textile waste and its impact on a land I have yet to see, Africa.
